Ahead of the club’s biggest match of the season, Legion FC prepares to welcome Louisville City FC to BBVA Field for the first time this season with its focus on closing the gap to first place in the Central Division. With twelve matches left in the season, and currently seven points back of first, the Black and Gold understands the urgency underlining Saturday’s contest.
Forward Junior Flemmings has had the hot hand in recent weeks, having scored five goals in the team’s last six games. His fellow Jamaican, forward Neco Brett will look to rejoin him on the scoresheet and boost the attack on Saturday night, and Brett now sits tied-second in the USLC in goals with 11 on the season and is up for USLC mid-season MVP.
After registering five clean sheets in the team’s first 11 matches, Legion FC has failed to blank any of its last eight opponents, so shoring things up at the back will be a priority on Saturday as the best attack in the Eastern Conference (39 goals this season) comes to town. In fact, both teams are inside the top seven in the USL in total shots this season with LOU coming in at 279 and BHM at 259, so expect fireworks Saturday night at BBVA Field.
“Tomorrow’s game is huge for us,” said Jay Heaps, Legion FC President and General Manager, in an interview with Birmingham Mountain Radio. “We’ve talked about it internally, with the group, but it’s probably the biggest game, one of the biggest games, in our club’s history.
“We had the first game, then some playoff games, but this is one of those for me where we’re playing a team like Louisville who we’re trying to emulate in our own way, but they’re very successful, they’re ahead of us in the standings, and we want to beat them on our home field on Saturday.”
Louisville comes to town riding high as one of the hottest teams in the USLC, unbeaten in eight games, and have perennially been one of the powers in the league, having made six consecutive Eastern Conference finals and won titles in 2017 and 2018. LOU won the last meeting between these two clubs 2-0 in Kentucky on June 16, and the match on May 8 ended in a 1-1 draw.
Forward Cameron Lancaster opened the scoring on 6/16, and now is tied with Neco Brett for second-most goals in the league with 11. Brian Ownby leads the team in assists with seven, Niall McCabe is tops in chances created with 30, and Lancaster, again, leads the way in shots with 39. Center back Sean Totsch, another LouCity pillar and USLC veteran, controls the tempo of his club’s games, as he leads the entire league, by over 100, in total passes this season with 1,257.
Louisville also is dead even with Birmingham this season in defensive statistics, as both teams have given up 21 goals and held on for five shutouts. All the match ups between these two clubs are chippy and intense, and that intensity dates back to March 2019, when Legion FC upset the defending champs, in Louisville, to claim the team’s first win in franchise history.
On this week’s VIVA Health injury report, Legion FC midfielder Daigo Kobayashi (knee) is questionable, and midfielder Bruno Lapa is out due to a sports hernia. Defender Freddy Kleemann has been recalled from loan by Austin FC.
Next week Legion FC hits the road for the first of three straight away contests, starting on Wednesday, September 1 at 7:00PM at Sporting Kansas City II. Fans can tune in to watch the match on ESPN+ or follow @bhmlegion on twitter for live updates.
The club’s next home match is Saturday, September 18 at 6:30PM at BBVA Field against OKC Energy FC. Fans can go ahead and snag tickets for 9/18 HERE.
