Legion FC is back at home tomorrow night at 7PM to take on Austin Bold FC in another edition of ‘Everybody Wins on Wednesdays’ with Legion FC. With a win, Birmingham can clinch homefield in the upcoming playoffs, so come join us for $1 hotdogs, $2 beers, a postgame firework show and a great game!
Unbeaten in six, Birmingham sits just two points off the top spot in the Central Division with four matches left in the regular season and seems to be peaking at the exact right time to put pressure on Louisville City FC for the Central Division crown. Continued rotation in the side, and quality play from in-game substitutes, will be key with a quick turnaround from this past Sunday’s match to Wednesday night, and then a third in a week this upcoming weekend.
After Neco Brett bagged his 16th goal of the season last game (fifth-most in the USL Championship), Eli Crognale and Jake Rufe both came on and scored goals to see out a fourth win in a row. While there is a clear leader in the clubhouse in goals scored, as second-most on the team is JJ Williams and Junior Flemmings with five each, the team spreads the love in terms of setting up Brett and the finishers. After Ryan James assist on Sunday, three players (James, Mikey Lopez, and Jonny Dean) share the team lead in assists this season.
This contest with Austin Bold FC will be the first full game between the two, after the originally scheduled match in June was abandoned due to rain. Any tickets, or parking, previously purchased for the original game date will be honored on Wednesday night.
Austin heads to Birmingham in a tight race for the final playoff spot in the competitive USLC Mountain Division. Sitting on 40 points and with a game in hand over New Mexico (39 pts) and Rio Grande Valley (38 pts), Bold will have everything to play for come Wednesday night. The team has also been solid on the road, with a 4-4-4 record away from Austin.
Despite sporting a stout defense that has given up just 31 goals this season (fifth-fewest in the league), ATX currently has a negative goal differential having scored just 29 times (second-fewest in USLC), so the team’s focus will be on livening up the attack. Xavier Baez leads the team in goals (six), Owayne Gordon is tops in shots (35) and assists (4), and Juan Torres has the most chances created (36).
For this game’s VIVA Health injury report, Legion FC forward JJ Williams (knock) is listed as questionable. Forward Junior Flemmings (international duty with Jamaica) and defender Freddy Kleemann (recalled from loan by Austin FC) will also be unavailable for selection.
