BIRMINGHAM, AL (July 31, 2021) – On a wet night in Birmingham, Legion FC versus Atlanta United 2 ended in a draw, 2-2, after second half goals from Neco Brett and Junior Flemmings for the home side were cancelled out by an ATL goal in the 96th minute.
Birmingham created a few more chances in the first half than the visitors, finishing the half with an advantage in shots (6-4), but could not find the back of the net, and Atlanta made Legion FC pay with a goal from forward Aidan McFadden in the 35th minute when he cut inside the right side of the box and found the top left corner of the net.
Legion FC Head Coach Tommy Soehn made two attacking subs early in the second half, Flemmings and forward JJ Williams, that paid dividends almost immediately. After subbing on in the 66th minute, Williams got into the box and was fouled from behind, earning the penalty that Brett buried. Atlanta goalkeeper Rios Novo just saved a penalty kick in his team’s game on Wednesday night by diving to his left, and tonight Brett beat him to his right-hand side by perfectly picking out the bottom corner.
As soon as play restarted, Legion were back on the offensive, and Brett’s fellow Jamaican Flemmings, fresh off national team duty with his country, scored his first goal in the Black and Gold in the 69th minute. Midfielder Mikey Lopez crossed the ball over to Flemmings in the top left corner of the Atlanta box, Flemmings took a touch to settle, and from a stand still put a pinpoint shot into the top right corner. The assist was also Lopez’s first of the season.

Birmingham squandered a few chances to put the game away late on, and Atlanta kept pressing. After earning a couple of late corner kicks, the visitors swung in a dangerous cross in the sixth minute of added time, and the rebound off a Legion player was rifled in by substitute forward Darwin Matheus for the equalizer to salvage a point for United 2.
“I think we did a good job of addressing what we needed to change at half time,” said Soehn. “Obviously, we created two goals, but I think we could’ve put the game away. Once we got the lead, I think we took our foot off of the gas and played different, and that’s something we have to change because it happened a little bit in Indy as well. We have to learn how to not change when we get up. So, it’s disappointing because it feels like a loss, but our guys had to come back, and you still have to credit them for coming back and taking the lead, but we also gotta learn to finish those games off.”
Midfielder Prosper Kasim when asked about the quick turnaround to play ATL2 again on Wednesday:
“You don’t know what’s going to happen in the next game, so you just prepare yourself mentally and then make sure you win every battle because since you’ve played them once, the next game is going to be tough. You just have to make sure you have a positive mentality and that we beat them.”
