BIRMINGHAM, AL (Nov. 5, 2021) – Following today’s vote of approval for early termination by the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees, Legion FC and the University of Alabama at Birmingham will end the lease agreement for the club’s use of PNC Field (formerly BBVA Field) following the conclusion of the 2021 USL Championship playoffs.

“We would like to thank the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, UAB President Ray L. Watts, and UAB Director of Athletics Mark Ingram, for the critical role the university played in helping launch Legion FC,” said Legion FC President and General Manager Jay Heaps. “We are excited for our first home playoff game on campus at PNC Field this Sunday and look forward to continuing our existing partnerships within UAB.”

UAB Senior Vice President of Finance and Administration Brian Burnett says UAB appreciates what its partnership with Legion FC has done for the club, the university and the city.

“We have been proud to partner with Legion FC in its efforts to launch an exciting brand of professional soccer in Birmingham,” Burnett said. “The relationship has been mutually beneficial with both Legion FC and UAB Athletics working together to enhance facilities for a great gameday experience for athletes and fans, as well as for the everyday use of UAB athletes and our campus. “With regards to Legion FC’s home venue for the 2022 season and beyond, we will make that announcement at the appropriate time once an agreement can be finalized,” said Heaps. “At this moment, our focus is on the players and on the 2021 USL Championship playoffs.”

The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees approved changing the name of BBVA Field to PNC Field on Nov. 5, 2021, in recognition of PNC’s acquisition of BBVA.

BIRMINGHAM, AL (Oct. 30, 2021) – Birmingham Legion FC dropped its final game of the regular season on Saturday night, 1-0 to Louisville City FC following a late, 82nd minute goal from Louisville forward Antoine Hoppenot.

The visitors kicked off the game on the front foot, putting Legion FC under pressure and controlling play for most of the first half, but things went into the break knotted up 0-0. Birmingham made some key adjustments at half time and out played LouCity for the majority of the second half but failed to find that breakthrough.

Louisville got on the board after playing the ball down the left through forward Brian Ownby who then swung in a cross to the back post that Hoppenot put in the back of the net, shortly after subbing on.

“[Louisville are] a good team,” said Legion FC Head Coach Tommy Soehn. “First half I thought they got the better of us. Second half we made adjustments, and I felt like we were the better side. Games like this come down to one chance sometimes, and they did a good job of finishing their chance. It’s heartbreaking, really.

“I felt like we got a little more compact and organized [in the second half] and killed the channels they were hurting us in. That’s Louisville, though. Pittsburgh is a different animal, so we’ll have to adjust to them.”

With tonight’s results, Legion FC will host Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC in the first round of the USL Championship playoffs on Sunday, November 7 at 4PM. TAMPA, Fla. – The USL Championship announced the Team of the Week Presented by Cleer Audio for Week 27 of the 2021 regular season on Tuesday, with Legion FC midfielders Bruno Lapa and Zach Herivaux earning spots on the team.

Lapa bagged his fourth and fifth goal of the season, as well as tallying his second assist of the year, in Birmingham’s comprehensive 6-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City II at home on Sunday in the second to last game of the regular season. The Brazilian added three key passes, six total shots, completed 82.5% of his passes, was fouled four times, and made four recoveries and one tackle defensively. The standout performance earned Lapa a spot on TOTW for the second time this season, after he was named Player of the Week in Week 6.

Herivaux made TOTW for the first time this season thanks to his role in a stellar defensive performance from Legion FC on Sunday, to go along with scoring his first goal of the season in the 6-0 win. The Haitian international controlled the game from his defensive midfield spot, completing 95.5% of his passes, while also winning seven duels, making two tackles and adding one clearance. The goal was Herivaux’s first for BHM since the 2019 playoff game at North Carolina FC.  

Louisville City FC forward Cameron Lancaster edged out Lapa for Player of the Week after recording the second hat trick of his career in the Championship to lead LouCity to a 3-1 victory against Memphis 901 FC on Saturday night. With the win, Louisville set itself up for a winner-take-all game with Legion FC on the last day of the regular season this Saturday, October 30, at 6:30PM, with the winner of the game clinching first place in the USLC Central Division. BIRMINGHAM, AL (Oct. 24, 2021) – Legion FC knew the pressure was back on after Central Division foe Louisville City FC beat Memphis Saturday night to move one point ahead of Birmingham in the standings. Well, the team rose to the occasion in record fashion by running riot over Sporting Kansas City II on Sunday afternoon to the tune of a 6-0 victory thanks to goals from Zach Herivaux, Bruno Lapa, Neco Brett, Lapa again, Junior Flemmings, and Prosper Kasim.

Herivaux got the party started early on in the 5th minute when he was played into the box by Flemmings before slotting a pass over to Lapa. Lapa’s shot hit off the post, and while Herivaux was behind the last defender, the ball came back out and was headed backwards by a defender to Herivaux, negating his offside position, before the Haitian international then calmly chested the ball down and scored.

The goal was Herivaux’s first of the season, and first for Legion FC since he scored in the team’s playoff game win over North Carolina FC in October 2019.

“It was exciting to get back on the scoresheet in this type of manner and to get a convincing result late in the season,” said Herivaux. “It helps our confidence, it helps the fans get excited, and it just puts us in a great position for next weekend against Louisville. I’m just excited about the performance that the guys put out.”

Lapa got his first of the night next, in the 18th minute to make it 2-0. Left back Ryan James aimed a Legion FC throw in at Brett in the SKC box, and Brett laid the ball off to Lapa who fired it in off the half-volley.

Those two names popped back up on the scoresheet again in quick succession towards the end of the first half, with Brett bagging his 18th goal of the season, tied for fourth-most in the USL Championship, in the 31st minute, and Lapa finishing his second of the evening and fifth of the season in the 39th.

For the third goal, Kasim got on the ball in midfield and played Lapa in behind. Lapa cut the ball across for Brett, and an SKC defender got a slight touch, but not enough to block the Jamaican from hitting the back of the net.

Lapa got his first of the night next, in the 18th minute to make it 2-0. Left back Ryan James aimed a Legion FC throw in at Brett in the SKC box, and Brett laid the ball off to Lapa who fired it in off the half-volley.

Those two names popped back up on the scoresheet again in quick succession towards the end of the first half, with Brett bagging his 18th goal of the season, tied for fourth-most in the USL Championship, in the 31st minute, and Lapa finishing his second of the evening and fifth of the season in the 39th.

For the third goal, Kasim got on the ball in midfield and played Lapa in behind. Lapa cut the ball across for Brett, and an SKC defender got a slight touch, but not enough to block the Jamaican from hitting the back of the net.

James and Kasim were then involved again in the team’s fourth goal as Kasim played the ball out wide to James, who then found Lapa in the box. Lapa attempted the flick the ball over to Flemmings, and the pass was poked away by a defender, but then the Brazilian was first to react, pouncing on the loose ball and putting his first-time effort in past the left post.

Flemmings capped off a quality performance with a goal of his own, his sixth of the season, which is second-most on the team, in the 70th minute. Herivaux to Lapa to Kasim got Birmingham from its own box to its opponents, Kasim found the overlapping right back, Jonny Dean wide right, and Dean played the ball in to Flemmings, who took a touch, turned, and found the left side netting to make it 5-0.

TAMPA, Fla. – The USL Championship announced the Team of the Week Presented by Cleer Audio for Week 26 of the 2021 regular season on Tuesday, with Legion FC defender Jonny Dean earning a spot for his stellar performance in Birmingham’s 0-0 draw at OKC Energy FC on Sunday.

The Macon, GA product was all over the pitch, yet again, from his right back role, helping shut down OKC leading scorer Villyan Bijev, to the point that Bijev switched sides of the field, as well as bombing forward as a creative outlet in the attack. Dean finished the match with a team-high four interceptions, won three duels, added two blocks, two chances created, and one clearance while completing 84% of his passes.

On the season, Dean leads the team in chances created (45), is tied for the team lead in assists (four), is second in blocks (12), third in passes (1,269) and clearances (46), fourth in interceptions (35), and fifth in tackles (37). This is Dean’s second Team of the Week honor of the season, after making it in Week 14.

Charlotte Independence forward Dane Kelly was voted Player of the Week after recording a pair of goals as the Independence clinched their return to the USL Championship Playoffs with a 5-1 victory against the Charleston Battery on Saturday night at American Legion Memorial Stadium. OKLAHOMA CITY, OK (Oct. 17, 2021) – Legion FC hit the road for its final away contest in the 2021 USL Championship regular season on Sunday night and had to settle for a 0-0 draw at OKC Energy FC, despite getting off 13 shots, and holding an edge in possession. The team’s five game winning streak ends, but the unbeaten run is extended to eight.

Strong defensive play from the group, specifically defensive midfielder Anderson Asiedu (five tackles), full backs Mikey Lopez (five tackles) and Jonny Dean (four interceptions), center back pair Alex Crognale (four clearances) and captain Phanuel Kavita, as well as goalkeeper Matt VanOekel secured a vital point and ninth clean sheet of the season.  

In the attack, the best opportunity for the visitors came in the 75th minute as a one-two with Ryan James saw substitute forward JJ Williams get a shot off from around the penalty area that was blocked. Midfielder Bruno Lapa then stepped up to hit the rebound, but OKC ‘keeper CJ Cochran produced a diving save, one of his five in the game, to keep it out.

Lapa and Asiedu led the way with three shots a piece, forward Junior Flemmings added another two on target, and Lapa, James, and Dean all had two key passes leading that created chances.

“On this field it’s difficult because it’s so small,” said Head Coach Tommy Soehn. “I think the space is so limited, and package that with them [OKC Energy FC] sitting in a little bit, and it’s hard to break that down. But we also had a couple chances, and if you put those chances away, especially early, it would force them to come out. We made a few adjustments because I don’t think we were good in the first half, at least in the second half I felt like we had them under pressure quite a bit. We just couldn’t get one today.

“We’re focused on trying to get as many points as we can, you know, because we’re not only competing against our own division, but we’re competing against the other division [Atlantic] as well. Every point is vital, and we’ve talked about that as a group, to try and keep pushing to get as many points as we can. Obviously, we leave today disappointed that we left two on the table, but it’s been a good run of form and we’ll just have to keep grinding. We know what’s at stake, and our goal now is to get the next three [points], and then we’ll deal with what comes up after that.”

With two games left in the regular season, at home on Sunday, October 24 against SKC and at home on Saturday, October 30 versus LouCity, Legion FC now sits two points clear of Louisville in first place in the USLC Central Division.

“Everyone is fighting for points, playoffs and home field advantage, so we need to stay confident and believe in ourselves because we still can control our own destiny in this division,” said James. “Yes, we look at the standings, but ultimately the goal is to win and to be in the best form we can be heading into this last stretch of the season, that’s our main focus.”

Birmingham Legion FC will host a playoff game in the Magic City for the first time in the club’s three-year history on Sunday, November 7, and the team currently controls its own destiny regarding the number one seed in the USL Championship Central Division with three games remaining in the regular season.

What is unknown, is Legion’s potential opponent in the first round of the playoffs. The top four teams from each division in the regular season will advance into a regionalized single-elimination bracket. Division winners will be matched with the fourth-place team, while second-placed teams will meet third-placed teams from the opposing division in the Conference Quarterfinals, matching up teams from the Atlantic Division and Central Division in the Eastern Conference.

FiveThirtyEight currently gives Legion FC a 59% chance to finish first in the Central, but, whether its first or second, potential opponent’s include Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (currently in second in the East on 51 points), the Charlotte Independence (third, 49) and Miami FC (fourth, 48).

All three East teams have remarkably similar statistical profiles this season. Pittsburgh has played one more game than MIA and CLT, and sports a 15-8-6 record and +16 goal differential, while Charlotte 15-9-4, +15 and Miami is 14-8-6, +13. PIT has scored 49 goals (fifth-most in the league) and allowed 33 (tied for sixth-fewest), CLT has scored 48 and given up 33 as well, while MIA has bagged 49 of its own and allowed 36.
