Veteran Birmingham sports executive brings decades of leadership, community relationships and professional sports experience to Legion FC
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — October 8, 2026 — Birmingham Legion FC today announced the hiring of longtime Birmingham sports executive Jonathan Nelson as Team President, adding one of the Magic City’s most experienced and respected sports business leaders to guide the club into its next chapter of growth.
Nelson brings decades of experience in professional sports and a proven record of building successful organizations, developing strong corporate partnerships and creating memorable fan experiences in the Birmingham market.
Most notably, Nelson spent 32 years with the Birmingham Barons organization, including an extended tenure as the club’s President and General Manager. During his leadership, the Barons became one of Minor League Baseball’s most recognized organizations, successfully strengthened their presence in downtown Birmingham and consistently built strong connections with fans, corporate partners and the broader community.
Nelson was named the Southern League’s Jimmy Bragan Executive of the Year three times, earning the honor in 2009, 2013 and 2016. His tenure also included multiple organizational awards and some of the most successful seasons in the Barons’ modern history.
“Jonathan understands Birmingham, he understands professional sports, and most importantly, he understands how to build lasting relationships with fans, partners and the community,” said Jay Heaps, Legion FC CEO. “As we look toward 2027 and beyond, we believe Jonathan’s leadership, experience and vision will be tremendous assets as we continue building Birmingham Legion FC into one of the strongest organizations in the USL Championship.”
Nelson’s extensive relationships throughout the Birmingham business and sports communities provide Legion FC with an experienced leader who understands both the opportunities and challenges of growing a professional sports franchise in the market.
“I am incredibly excited for the opportunity to join Birmingham Legion FC and help lead the club into its next chapter,” said Nelson. “Birmingham has been home throughout my professional career, and I have seen firsthand how passionate this community can be when it rallies around its teams. Legion FC has tremendous potential, and I look forward to working alongside our staff, supporters, partners and the entire Birmingham community as we continue building something special for this city.”
Nelson’s appointment comes as Legion FC begins laying the foundation for the 2027 season and beyond, with a renewed focus on expanding its fan base, strengthening corporate and community partnerships, growing matchday attendance and creating a sustainable platform for long-term success.
With Nelson joining the club’s leadership team, Birmingham Legion FC remains committed to establishing deeper roots throughout the community while continuing to elevate the club’s position within Birmingham’s growing professional sports landscape.
