BIRMINGHAM, AL — Birmingham Legion FC have added international pedigree and elite academy development to their squad with the signing of 21-year-old defender Leo Duru, who joins the club on loan from English side Blackburn Rovers F.C.

The Manchester-born defender arrives in Birmingham after progressing through one of the most demanding development pipelines in world football, the English professional academy system, where players train and compete at elite levels from a young age within clubs tied to the country’s top professional leagues.
Duru began his development in the academy of Manchester United F.C. before continuing his pathway with Blackburn Rovers, one of England’s historic professional clubs. Competing in the EFL Championship, Blackburn operates within a league widely regarded as one of the most competitive second divisions in world football, featuring former Premier League clubs, international talent, and an intense schedule that serves as a proving ground for young professionals pushing toward the top levels of the sport.
After progressing through Blackburn’s academy ranks, Duru signed his first professional contract with the club and made his senior professional debut in the English Football League Cup in 2024, appearing in Blackburn’s 6–1 victory over Stockport County.
In 2025, Duru also gained experience in North America through a loan move to San Diego FC, a club competing in Major League Soccer. The opportunity gave the young defender valuable exposure to the pace, physicality, and travel demands unique to the American professional game. That experience provides Duru with an early familiarity with the MLS environment and the broader U.S. professional model, something that should help ease his transition as he continues his growth with Birmingham Legion FC.
Standing out for his athleticism and adaptability, Duru has developed into a versatile, powerful, and fast wide defender capable of contributing in multiple roles across the pitch. While naturally a right back, he is comfortable playing on either side of the pitch as an outside back or as an attacking wide player.
Going forward, he uses his pace and technical ability to beat opponents in wide areas, creating attacking opportunities and contributing to the final third with both goals and assists. Defensively, Duru is a disciplined and intelligent player with the tactical awareness to adapt to different positions and has shown the ability to handle difficult defensive situations, particularly isolated 1v1 matchups where he is extremely difficult for attackers to beat.
Head Coach Jay Heaps believes Duru’s background in England’s elite development system will translate well to Legion’s squad.
“Leo has come through a top system in England and brings a really strong understanding of the game. He’s comfortable in multiple roles and gives us great depth on the outside. We’re excited to add him to the group.”

With elite development, international experience, and the versatility to contribute across the pitch, Duru arrives in Birmingham as another dynamic addition as Legion continues to build a fast, flexible squad for the season ahead.
