During the 2022 season, Spangenberg made three appearances for Birmingham, saving five of the nine shots he faced. In Legion’s first-ever home playoff match, Spangenberg subbed on when the game went to penalties and kept Legion’s hopes alive with two back-to-back must-saves.
One of Legion FC’s first-ever signings ahead of the 2019 season, Spangenberg has recorded 34 saves across 13 appearances playing for Birmingham. He spent 2018 with the Richmond Kickers in the USL Championship, and spent some time in Richmond on loan in 2015, while a member of Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution. Before making the move to the USL full time, Spangenberg played in the NASL for Puerto Rico FC for the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
Spangenberg’s professional career began with MLS side Chivas USA, but prior to signing with Chivas, Spangenberg was a standout college player at Missouri State University, where he finished his senior year as the school’s all-time career leader in goals against average (0.67) and led the Bears to the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference Championship. While in school, Spangenberg also played in USL League Two for the Laredo Heat in 2010 and Springfield Demize from 2012-2013.
