BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – When Birmingham Legion FC took the pitch at Protective Stadium last Saturday against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, there was a new name on the team sheet at our last home game. No, it was not a misprint, a new goalkeeper did sign into the squad and suited up on the bench.
His name is Trevor McMullen, and now it’s time to properly welcome him to the Legion family.
“I’m grateful to be here and to be part of this club,” McMullen said of becoming the newest Legionnaire. “The players and staff have made me feel welcome right away, and I’m ready to do whatever I can to help the team. Whether it’s in training, on the bench, or when my chance comes on the field, I’ll give everything I have for Birmingham.”
McMullen comes to Birmingham after a standout career at Mercer University, where he proved himself as one of the Southern Conference’s most consistent and commanding keepers. In his four seasons with the Bears, he recorded 223 saves across 66 matches, earned 21 shutouts, set the SoCon record for Defensive Player of the Week honors, and lifted two conference championships. His calm presence, sharp reflexes, and winning mentality are why he was highly sought after by Legion FC
This may have looked like a random move to the fans, but it was anything but.
After trial stints both domestically and abroad, McMullen had most recently been training with Legion FC, where he earned respect of the squad by showing the qualities the club has long valued. And with veteran goalkeeper Matt van Oekel unavailable, the opportunity opened up for McMullen to step into the roster for his first professional contract.
“Trevor has been training with us and showing he belongs,” Legion FC head coach Mark Briggs explained. “The chance came for him to join the roster, and he earned it. It’s always about being prepared for the moment, and he’s done exactly that.”
McMullen’s arrival adds another layer of competition at the goalkeeper position. With two keepers in Van Oekel and Fernando Delgado both having shown the qualities of a top keeper, McMullen’s addition brings fresh energy into the group and raises the standard even further. Depth and competition matter, especially in the stretch of the season where every point makes a difference.
As Legion FC heads west to face Orange County SC on Saturday, McMullen is excited to play a role for the club, whether he’s on the bench or called into action. One thing is for sure, if and when his number is called, he’ll bring the same grit, professionalism, and hunger that defines Legion FC.
