The 21-year-old attacker from Acworth, GA previously played club soccer in Birmingham with Alabama FC
BIRMINGHAM, AL (March 9, 2023) – Birmingham Legion FC announced today the signing of former Alabama FC forward Diba Nwegbo, pending league and federation approval.
Nwegbo, 21, joins Legion FC after a standout collegiate career at the College of William & Mary and one stellar season in USL League Two leading the line for Vermont Green FC.
“We are excited to sign Diba to his first professional contract here in Birmingham as he has ties to the area having played club ball for Alabama FC,” said Jay Heaps, Legion FC President and General Manager. “He’s a talented attacking player with great potential that will come in and make an impact on our forward line.”
Last summer, Nwegbo was one of the top goal scorers in League Two, bagging nine goals in just 12 games for Vermont. While he is set to graduate from W&M this spring, Nwegbo completed his time on the field this past fall, scoring nine goals, showing off more creative skill with 17 assists, and earning a spot on an All-Colonial Athletic Association Second Team and Third Team from 2019-2022.
In high school, growing up in Acworth, GA, just northwest of Atlanta, Nwegbo played in Birmingham for Alabama FC in 2018-19 and totaled 17 goals and 10 assists en route to earning an invite to the 2018 ECNL National Training Camp and to a Under-17 Nigerian National Team camp.
“I’m very excited to be back in Birmingham and to begin my professional career here,” said Nwegbo. “It’s taken a lot of hard work and dedication to get to this point and that will only continue. I’m ready to give my all to the team for us to succeed and ultimately win the league this year!”
Nwegbo travelled with Legion FC to North Carolina for a preseason friendly versus Charlotte FC in February, earned the start, and assisted our first goal, to Juan Agudelo, before scoring our second of the day on a break away.
