Birmingham Legion FC announced today the signing of Academy players Jaylen Lester and Jonathan Hernandez to USL Academy contracts, pending league and federation approval.
The USL Academy contracts allow players to retain NCAA eligibility while also being eligible to play in the USL Championship for the club’s First Team. The structure of these contracts opens a pathway for young players to gain valuable experience training and competing alongside professionals.
“Jaylen and Jonathan have had the opportunity to train with us for a little bit, and I believe this is going to be a good addition to our team,” said President and General Manager Jay Heaps. “They’ve both shown the ability to compete at this level, and we’re excited to continue supporting their development.”
Lester, 18, joins Legion FC after spending the past two seasons with the FC Cincinnati Academy. The winger was a member of FC Cincinnati’s U-18 squad and made his FC Cincinnati 2 debut in 2025. Lester has also represented Jamaica at the youth international level.
Hernandez joins Birmingham after spending time with the Atlanta United Academy. The forward joined Atlanta United’s Academy in 2024 from AFC Lightning and was a member of Atlanta United’s U-18 squad.
“I’m super excited for this opportunity and a chance to show that my hard work pays off,” said Lester.
“I’m super blessed to have this chance to showcase my ability,” said Hernandez.
The signings of Lester and Hernandez continue Legion FC’s investment in developing young talent and creating a pathway for Academy players to gain experience within the professional game while maintaining their collegiate opportunities.
