BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham Legion FC delivered a composed and clinical performance on the road Saturday, securing a 3–1 victory over Rhode Island FC at Centreville Bank Stadium.
Legion wasted no time setting the tone, striking early in the 3rd minute through Sebastian Tregarthen. The forward finished off a well-worked move, assisted by Dawson McCartney, to give Birmingham an immediate advantage.
“Excellent team performance. We had a great start to the game,” said Head Coach Jay Heaps.
Rhode Island responded in the 17th minute, leveling the match through Leo Afonso, but Legion remained composed heading into halftime with the score tied 1–1.
“RIFC is a tough team and they were able to get us on a mistake, putting a lot of pressure on us,” Heaps added.
Birmingham came out of the break with intent and quickly regained control. Defender Phanuel Kavita restored the lead in the 48th minute, capitalizing on momentum early in the second half.
Just nine minutes later, Legion extended the advantage as Ronaldo Damus found the back of the net in the 57th minute, finishing a chance created by Tregarthen to put the visitors firmly in control.
“Our second half was a complete 45. We made some adjustments in our defensive shape, and the midfield did a tremendous job winning the ball and breaking lines, helping our attack,” Heaps said.
Despite Rhode Island holding a majority of possession and creating pressure throughout the match, Birmingham remained disciplined defensively and efficient in front of goal. The hosts recorded 61.2% possession and 18 shots, but Legion’s ability to convert key moments proved decisive.
Birmingham’s balanced performance on both sides of the ball secured all three points, highlighted by early attacking intent and a strong second half response.
