Birmingham, AL- Birmingham Legion FC returns to Protective Stadium on Thursday night for one of its biggest home matches of the season as the Black and Gold host Detroit City FC on Military Appreciation Night.
When: Thursday, July 2, 7 PM CST
Where: Protective Stadium
Fresh off a 1-1 draw against Loudoun United FC, Legion looks to build on another resilient performance after Sebastián Tregarthen’s dramatic 89th-minute equalizer earned Birmingham a point against one of the Eastern Conference’s top clubs. The Black and Gold have now earned points in back-to-back league matches and will look to continue that momentum against a familiar conference rival.
Thursday’s match will also serve as the club’s annual Military Appreciation Night, honoring the men and women who have served our country. In addition to the action on the pitch, fans will witness the debut of Birmingham’s new FORGED FOR BATTLE kit, inspired by the legendary USS Alabama and the city’s deep military history. The evening will conclude with a post-match fireworks show, making it one of the premier matchday experiences of the season.
Scouting Detroit City FC
Detroit City enters the matchup as one of the Eastern Conference’s most disciplined defensive teams. Known for its physical style of play and organized back line, Detroit has consistently made things difficult for opposing attacks while remaining dangerous on set pieces and in transition.
The two clubs have developed a competitive rivalry in recent seasons, with every meeting featuring high intensity from the opening whistle.
Former Legion midfielder Kobe Hernandez-Foster returns to Protective Stadium after transitioning over to Detroit in July of 2025.
Legion Looking to Continue Climbing
Birmingham’s attack continues to show encouraging signs.
Sebastián Tregarthen’s late equalizer against Loudoun highlighted the club’s determination, while players like Tyler Pasher, Sebastián Saucedo, Samuel Shashoua and Peter-Lee Vassell have continued to create quality opportunities in recent weeks.
Defensively, Legion has also found greater consistency. The Black and Gold have conceded just three goals over their last four USL Championship matches while earning points in consecutive league contests.
With another opportunity at home, Birmingham will look to turn strong performances into all three points against one of the conference’s toughest opponents.
Matchup to Watch
The battle between Birmingham’s attack and Detroit’s defensive organization could decide Thursday night’s contest.
Legion has generated chances consistently over the past several matches, but will face one of the league’s more disciplined defensive units. Winning second balls, limiting turnovers in midfield, and taking advantage of set-piece opportunities will be key if the Black and Gold hope to break through.
Salute to Service Night
Thursday’s match celebrates the service and sacrifice of the nation’s military members and veterans during Birmingham Legion FC’s annual Salute to Service Night.
The club will debut its new FORGED FOR BATTLE kit, a special edition uniform inspired by the USS Alabama and designed to honor Alabama’s military heritage. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to experience the pregame festivities and pick up the new kit before kickoff.
Following the final whistle, fans can join the field for a spectacular post-match fireworks show to cap off the evening.
