BIRMINGHAM, AL — Birmingham Legion FC today announced the acquisition of defender Keegan Hughes on loan from the New England Revolution through the end of the 2026 season, strengthening the club’s backline ahead of its second away match of the 2026 USL Championship season.
Legion FC will travel to face Loudoun United FC on Saturday, April 4, with kickoff set for 4:00 PM CT.
Hughes joins the club following experience across both MLS and MLS NEXT Pro, most recently featuring in eight MLS appearances for New England since last season. A composed and physically dominant center back, Hughes brings a strong two-way presence that aligns with the club’s defensive identity and style of play.
“Keegan is a player we have been tracking since last season,” said Head Coach and CEO Jay Heaps. “He’s a well-rounded center back with a real physical presence, especially in aerial duels. What stood out to us is his composure on the ball and his ability to break lines out of the back, which fits exactly how we want to play.”
In 2025 MLS NEXT Pro competition, Hughes posted an 81% aerial duel win rate, ranking in the highest percentile among defenders. He also ranked among league leaders in long passes completed and duels won among center backs, highlighting both his defensive reliability and ability to initiate attacking phases from deep positions.
His experience at the professional level, combined with his statistical performance, positions him as a strong addition as Birmingham looks to build momentum on the road early in the 2026 campaign.
Hughes will be available for selection as Legion FC continues its road stretch this weekend.
