As the United States Men’s National Team prepares to begin its 2026 FIFA World Cup journey, Birmingham Legion FC is sending its best wishes to the red, white and blue, and especially to one of the Magic City’s own.
Chris Richards, a Birmingham native, is set to represent not only his country, but the city that helped shape him, on soccer’s biggest stage. From growing up in Alabama to competing at the highest levels of the game, Richards’ journey is a proud moment for Birmingham and a reminder of what is possible for young players across our community.

This summer, all eyes turn to the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the United States hosts the world alongside Canada and Mexico. The USMNT will open its campaign in Group D, where it will face Paraguay, Australia and Türkiye in three exciting group-stage matchups.
The U.S. begins play on Friday, June 12 against Paraguay at Los Angeles Stadium, before heading to Seattle Stadium to take on Australia on Friday, June 19. The team will close out group-stage play on Thursday, June 25 back in Los Angeles against Türkiye.
The group stage is the first step in the World Cup journey. Each team plays three matches, earning three points for a win, one point for a draw and zero for a loss. At the end of group play, the top two teams from each group advance automatically, along with the eight best third-place teams across the tournament. From there, the competition moves into the knockout rounds, where every match becomes win-or-go-home.
For Richards, the moment is bigger than soccer. It is a chance to carry Birmingham with him onto the main stage and inspire the next generation of players right here at home. As he lines up against some of the best players in the world, the Magic City will be watching, cheering and proudly standing behind one of its own.
Birmingham Legion FC will be bringing fans together throughout the tournament with official Legion watch parties at Good People Brewing and Anvil Pub & Grill, giving supporters a place to celebrate every USMNT moment alongside the Legion community. Fans can also enter to win a signed Chris Richards USA Trionda Club Ball, a special piece of memorabilia celebrating Birmingham’s connection to the World Cup stage.
In addition, Legion FC is offering the Chris Richards Ticket Pack for the Saturday, June 13 match at Protective Stadium. The night will feature Wrestling Night, with WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley in attendance, for a fan meet and greet.
It is a massive summer for soccer, a massive moment for the United States, and a proud chapter for Birmingham.
From everyone at Birmingham Legion FC: good luck to Chris Richards and the USMNT. The Magic City is behind you.
