This week’s pair of fixtures is critical for Legion FC, as the results of each will determine whether or not postseason soccer in the USL Championship will involve Birmingham. The black and gold will take on New York Red Bulls II on Wednesday, October 16 at 7:00 pm, and Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on Sunday, October 20 at 4:30 pm.
Wednesday’s contest with New York honors our troops with Salute to Service Night, presented by Vulcan Materials Company. On Sunday, Mercedez-Benz of Birmingham will be in the Legion FC Plaza pregame to present Fan Appreciation activities.
Still in Control
While some of Legion FC’s recent results have been unfavorable, results around the league have allowed the club and its supporters to breath a sigh of relief heading into the meeting with New York Red Bulls II. Charleston’s missteps have seen it remain behind Birmingham in the Eastern Conference standings, while Saint Louis FC’s dip in form has opened up an opportunity for the squad to move into ninth.
Like Birmingham, Charleston has two games remaining on its schedule - Saint Louis on the other hand, has only one game left. The black and gold can secure their spot in the postseason by winning out their two remaining contests, while any combination of six points dropped from the Battery or Saint Louis FC would also see Legion FC make it into the playoffs.
The boys’ first opportunity to face off against New York was cut short as inclement weather forced their meeting with the visitors on April 6 to be postponed to Wednesday.
When Legion FC travelled to MSU Soccer Park in May, Red Bulls II came away with a 5-0 victory. The loss remains Birmingham’s largest to date, a statistic it will want to avenge in its upcoming meeting.
Legion FC is a different side from the one that first faced off against New York, and it will be ready to showcase that in this crucial matchup.
