Legion FC’s 1-1 draw with Loudoun United FC extended their unbeaten streak to eight games. Not only has the streak put Birmingham back into the playoff discussion, it also saw Legion FC become owners of the USL Championship’s fourth longest shutout streak in league history.
However, the black and gold’s opportunity to make history does not stop there. If Legion FC can continue their unbeaten run Wednesday, September 4, against Atlanta United 2, they will be the first team in Championship history to go eight games without a win who then subsequently went nine games unbeaten in the same season.
The last time Legion FC took on Atlanta United 2, it put four goals past the five stripes. The contest was Birmingham’s highest scoring outing so far this season, which is a promising sign heading into the trip to Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
Atlanta United 2 has conceded the second most goals in the entire Championship at 60, with only Hartford Athletic ahead of them at 64 goals conceded. Legion FC are one of two teams in a playoff position that have a negative goal differential, so a trip to Atlanta gives them the opportunity to improve that.
Room to Breathe
Following Legion FC’s match with Atlanta United 2, the black and gold will return to BBVA Field to take on St. Louis FC in another crucial match - with regards to a spot in the postseason.
St. Louis is the side most poised to knock someone out of playoff position, so building momentum ahead of the contest will be crucial for the boys to solidify their spot in the playoffs.
