Defense has played a major role in Legion FC’s success over the last five contests. Three of Birmingham’s last four wins were decided by a single goal, with their defense quick to close up shop after the deadlock is finally broken.
Head Coach Tommy Soehn’s side extended the league’s longest active shutout streak (465 minutes) with a 1-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rowdies on August 10. The black and gold host Memphis 901 FC on Saturday, in hopes of extending not only their shutout streak, but their unbeaten streak as well.
You cannot lose if you do not concede, and Legion FC looks to continue sticking to that statement against Memphis this weekend at BBVA Field.
Set Piece Defending
901 FC has many players gifted in the height department, so defending set pieces will be crucial for Birmingham to keep the ball out of their own net. With several players over six feet tall, service to these players on corners and free kicks will be common.
Legion FC should not struggle with combatting Memphis’s height, though, considering the physical presence of players like JJ Williams, Mathieu Laurent, Brian Wright and Kyle Fisher to serve as secure cover.
In addition to being dangerous on set pieces, 901 FC is able to hurt opponents with individual ability alone from players like Lagos Kunga, Brandon Allen, and Adam Najem. Each of those players excel in taking on defenders and creating scoring opportunities for not only their teammates, but themselves as well.
Shutting these players down and taking the ball off of them will be important to disrupting the flow of Memphis’s attack. The Birmingham back line will have to make sure they do not step in too early when defending one-on-one and remain disciplined as they have in previous matches.
Kickoff Saturday at BBVA Field is scheduled for 7:00PM - gates will open at 5:30. Get your tickets HERE.
