Marcel Appiah signed with Legion FC in January 2019 as one of the club's first signings, but after playing the full 90' minutes in the USL Championship season opener on March 10, a calf injury in training sidelined the German center back for nearly three months.
He finally made his return to the pitch this past weekend as Legion FC traveled to face the Charleston Battery, and while he would have preferred a BHM win, he was excited to be back.
“For me of course I was happy that I started and got time on the pitch. My calf injury is good, so I didn’t have any problems with it. I’m just happy to be back and to help the team.”
When asked for his thoughts on Appiah's return, Head Coach Tom Soehn said, “I thought he did well. He eased himself into the game, and him being there in the middle let Mikey get forward more, which led to the goal, so that worked well. I’m happy for him getting back healthy and back out there, and he put in a quality 65’ minutes of work for us tonight.”
The 30-year-old veteran brings a decade of professional experience to the roster and spent the past two seasons with VfL Osnabrück in the German third division.
Appiah has been a consistent starter since the 2007-2008 season, having played over 300 times for TSG Sprockhövel, Arminia Bielefeld, Arminia Bielefeld II, and VfL Osnabrück in Germany and for NEC Nijmegen in the Netherlands. In the 2012-2013 season, Appiah made 31 appearances for Arminia Bielefeld in 3. Liga, and scored three goals with three assists to help the club gain promotion to 2. Bundesliga. Appiah earned himself a transfer to NEC Nijmegen in 2014 and made 27 appearances while helping the club win the Eerste Divisie and, again, gain promotion, this time to the Eredivisie, the top flight in Holland.
